We’ve all read the articles that solidify our concerns about additives in cosmetics and skin care products. While this is disturbing to some, to others, so long as it’s not being ingested, the skin will provide a suitable barrier. What people forget is that harsh chemicals can still be absorbed through the skin, and with that in mind we set about making a natural shaving body butter.
The result is made with coconut oil, natural honey, and citrus. The cream is suitable for shaving as well as a general body butter, cuticle treatment and moisturizer.
*Please note, since this is a very basic recipe, you needn’t worry about a shelf life per se, instead just going of the best before of the coconut oil.
Why are we using coconut oil? Good question, we’ve written about it here. Essentially, we use it to improve skin and hair, help prevent premature aging and because it makes skin supple in preparation for shaving.
For this batch we added the zest of a citrus fruit, in this case, grapefruit, primarily for a fresh scent. However, zest is also good for exfoliating dry skin and removing old cells. You don’t have to use grapefruit, we just had one to hand. Any citrus zest will do, or substitute in an essential oil of your choice. Because there is citrus zest in the solution, there may be little pieces of zest that perhaps you will need to wipe off when using, again, not too much of an issue for most.
- 1½ cups of coconut oil, measured as solid (Where do I buy coconut oil)
- 5 tablespoons honey
- The zest of a whole grapefruit or other citrus fruit (substitute essential oil to preference)
- Use Citrus Essential oil (where on earth do I buy that?)
- Melt the coconut oil by placing the jar in a bowl of hot water.
- Add the honey to the melted oil. (This ensures it’s even throughout.)
- Grate the zest into a bowl and carefully transfer into the solution.
- Transfer to a container and cover. Make sure it’s air tight. Don’t use an open container.
Please note: Coconut oil solidifies at room temp. Once all the honey and citrus is evenly mixed, you’ll end up with a great universal lotion. The end consistency will look something like this.
Need something to put this Body butter in?
We use these retro looking glass jars that seal for freshness! In fact, they’re pretty good for anything and cheap too, but we use them just because it doesn’t clutter our cupboards and it makes body butters look far better! I don’t think we’d make it if it had to go in a bowl with kitchen foil and the like! What else could we put our body butter in!
